Magick Eye2 Preview Private View.

Although the main launch party for Magick Eye2 will not be until Halloween we had an informal opening last night (Oct 18th) with artists and a few pals.

APE test prints...

Here are test prints for a couple of double page spreads from the "Torchsongs & Firehoses" comic section.

This Issue of APE employs a Wabi-sabi aesthetic which celebrates the imperfections intrinsic to the stencil duplicator printing process.

These imperfections make each issue of the magazine subtly different to the one before and therefor unique.

The Illustrated Ape magazine

Art directed by 'Stripped' curator Jason Atomic & Honey Manko the new issue of The Illustrated Ape magazine is currently in production.

Not seen since the collapse of Borders bookshop, Ape returns this year as a limited edition, small-press publication and will launch with an exhibition at Orbital Comics in the first week of Dec 2012.

The magazine will come in a printed paper bag and will be accompanied by a 24 track CD "Torchsongs & Fire Hoses" written and performed by Christian David with music composed by Noko (of Apollo 440, Luxuria and Magazine fame).

Ape will be printed with old-fashioned stencil duplicator technology in black and red on white,
at Hurst Street Studios (which print Radiohead's limited edition record sleeves).

Printing in 2 colours on this machine requires that 2 separate pieces of artwork be created for each page and that each page to be fed through the machine twice.

This gives the pages a delightfully nostalgic slightly off-register effect.

The majority of the magazine will be a comic section, with each track of "Torchsongs & Fire Hoses" illustrated by a different artist from a variety of disciplines (fine art, comix, fashion, music, tattoo etc..)

Webstore open!

The Stripped exhibition will come down this weekend, April 1st.
However this blog will continue to operate, bringing news of comic related art and shows.

The work from Stripped will still be available from Orbital comics for a limited period, the first batch has been posted in the Orbital webstore revealing at last the names of our postcard art contributors.

Prices start at £20 for the Stripped postcards which feature original paintings, illustrations, collages, prints and more by the likes of Len Bellinger, Triclops Studios, Jason Atomic, Tiff McGinnis, Henry Hate, Dennis Franklin & more....

In case you missed the chance to see Stripped in person here are a few works that we haven't featured here yet...

First up a couple of pages produced by Garry Leach for Penthouse Comics in 2001 when he was standing in for Archie comics legend Dan DeCarlo.

Another contributor who, like Garry is known for his work on 'The Galaxy's Greatest Comic', 2000ad. Is Edmund Bagwell who brought his Kirby inspired brand of cosmic comic art. Edmund submitted both the original line art and a digitally coloured print version of his 'Blue Man' as well as a batch of ink sketch postcards.

Next up we have Beatrice Schleyer's anti-heroes colection. Wolverine, Tetsuo, Elektra and Dark Phoenix. All acrylic on canvas photo prints.

Our next couple of posts will take a closer look at the work of 'Monster' artists Lyons & Franklin, and the anthropological researches of Mark Wigan...
